What does a Financial Planner actually do?

There are often misconceptions surrounding the role of a financial planner and how they can help you achieve financial freedom.

When asked what I do for a living, and I answer 'Financial Planner', I often hear, "oh, so you're an accountant; can you do my taxes?" in response. While I can't do their taxes, I can do my best to dispel the misconceptions about my profession.

A financial planner assists clients in reaching their life goals by helping them plan and invest for their future. I quickly learned that everybody's future ambitions and achievements are unique. For some people, reaching financial security is the most important; others put a much greater emphasis on attainable lifestyles - such as owning a beachside shack, driving the latest car or holidaying overseas each year (think sailing the Greek Islands)!

When seeing a financial planner, we may cover such topics as cash flow planning, superannuation, investments and income/life insurance, which on the face of it, aren't particularly exciting. However, these financial devices can help you get what you want in life and provide a vital backup in worst-case scenarios. All so you can do what you want, when you want and get off the hamster wheel!

Whether clients are buying their first home, starting a family, clearing the nest or examining Maldives real estate for retirement options, their individual goals will always look different. My job as a financial planner is to work with clients to get them where they want to go and achieve their goals.
